Carlsberg unveil the world’s first ‘paper’ beer bottle

By on Tuesday, October 15, 2019

Danish brewer Carlsberg have announced plans to develop a paper beer bottle made entirely from sustainably sourced wood. Originally announced in 2015, the ‘Green Fibre Bottle’ is now inching its way closer to reality. The company has revealed two prototypes they claim are fully recyclable, meaning they could become the first in the world to develop a paper beer bottle.

The Copenhagen-based company have said that their prototypes ‘have an inner barrier to allow the bottles to contain beer’. Currently these inside barriers are made of a plastic film, but Carlsberg are trying to create a barrier made entirely of biomaterials. This is part of the company’s effort to have zero-carbon emissions at its breweries and reduce by 30% the carbon footprint across its value chains by 2030.

“We are pleased with the progress we’ve made on the Green Fibre Bottle so far,” Myriam Shingleton, vice president of group development at Carlsberg Group, said. “While we are not completely there yet, the two prototypes are an important step towards realizing our ultimate ambition of bringing this breakthrough to market. Innovation takes time and we will continue to collaborate with leading experts in order to overcome remaining technical challenges, just as we did with our plastic-reducing Snap Pack.” The Snap Pack—announced last year—allows Carlsberg to replace plastic rings on six-packs of cans with glue.

The brewer has said it will join forces with Coca-Cola, Absolut and L’Oreal to create this sustainable bottle, in the hope that collaboration will fundamentally change the industry for the better.
