Giant lungs show the effect of Delhi smog

By on Thursday, November 8, 2018

With Diwali currently being celebrated, attention has turned to the damaging levels of air pollution in Delhi.

An installation depicting human lungs was unveiled on November 3 in New Delhi at the Sir Ganga Ram hospital, in order to showcase the severity of the issue and bring awareness to the impact of air pollution on healthy lungs. This campaign has been launched by the Help Delhi Breathe Initiative, the Lung Care Foundation and the hospital. The replica of lungs has been made by Jhatkaa, a Bangalore-based non-profit organisation, that is active within the clean air movement.

The System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research, commonly known as SAFAR, announced on Monday that the air quality is likely to deteriorate to the “severe-plus emergency” category following Diwali. Prevailing weather conditions coupled with the use of firecrackers will “make air quality persist in severe range for at least two days on November 8 and November 9”, the government agency revealed.
