Star Wars passes the metaphorical baton to Marvel as it smashes record

It will not come as a shock to most to hear that the latest instalment in the MCU has smashed the record for the biggest opening weekend in the history of cinema. Taking a whopping $640 million worldwide thus far, Avengers: Infinity War took the title from the equally monumental Star Wars franchise and their offering, The Force Awakens.

Not one to be sore losers of their title, the folks over at Lucas Films today put out a touching social post “passing the baton” both figuratively and literally with an image of Rey handing over her lightsaber to none other than Iron Man and congratulating Marvel on their accomplishment.

Perhaps this heart-warming camaraderie has something to do with both franchises being owned by Disney or perhaps Star Wars will simply see this as a healthy challenge to beat with their Episode 9 come 2019.
