New Spoof App Alerts Your Phone When the Light Turns Green for Distracted Driving Awareness Month

In the wake of ‘Distracted Driving Awareness Month’ a new gag product has been launched called Redlight Greenlight accompanied with a fake crowdfunding campaign of $1 million and a satirical spoof ad.

The product is a camera that sits on your dashboard, facing out the windshield, and notifies your smartphone when the light turns from red to green. The pushing point of this product is that it enables the user to keep their face glued to their screen for as long as possible whilst stationary.

The Ad shows a young woman sitting at a traffic light distracted by her phone and the cars behind beeping in frustration. She explains that cars were “invented over a century ago, when people texted each other by standing near one another and using their mouths.” All these years later, and cars still “aren’t designed for you to drive, and like your friend’s photo of an airplane wing.” The Ad also explains that the camera will also help flag up slow moving pedestrians.

Since launching the fake crowdfunding campaign the product has actually raised $1,383 of its $1 million. This includes someone paying $500 – the “Superhighway Investor” – to receive a rose gold camera.  This campaign was created by the Merkin Brothers to bring attention to distracted driving. People believing that this product is real is perhaps confirmation that awareness is needed.
