Soldier silhouettes appear across the United Kingdom to mark WWI centenary

From the snowy fields of Kent to The Tower of London, silhouette sculptures of Tommie’s from the First World War appeared in sites all across the UK this morning.

Titled ‘There But Not There’ and put together by the charity Remembered; the activation marks the latest in a series of campaigns to raise awareness for the centenary of the First World War in which 888,246 British and Commonwealth soldiers lost their lives.

The series of 6ft silhouettes will continue to tour the country until Armistice Day this November.

The Charity are also selling smaller 10 inch versions for personal purchase with an aim to raise £15million for the Armed Forces and mental health charities supporting veterans of wars past and present.

Former British Army chief Lord Dannatt, who is leading the campaign, said: ‘The poppies at the Tower of London captured the start of the national WWI commemoration – There But Not There will be the abiding concluding image.

In buying the Tommies and silhouettes, people are not only commemorating the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of British and Commonwealth soldiers, they are also supporting the veterans of today, with all profits going to charities supporting the armed forces community.’

Amazingly since of the launch of the campaign, just a few hours ago, the charity has already raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the cause.
