MARIJWHATNOW? Seattle Police Hand-Out Doritos Instead of Arrests at Hempfest 2013

As States in the US continue to legalise marijuana use by adults over 21, Seattle Police have found a new approach to educating users on safe practice and clarifying what is now legal under the new laws – by handing out bags of Doritos instead of arrests.
“It’s meant to be ironic. The idea of police passing out Doritos at a festival that celebrates pot, we’re sure, is going to generate some buzz.” said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, Department Spokesman.

Fixed to each bag is a label encouraging revellers with a case of the munchies to visit the website “MARIJWHATNOW? A Guide to Legal Marijuana Use in Seattle“. The website has been specially created to clarify and explain the new marijuana legalisation law and offers a ‘question and answer’ tool.
As the website is still under development (or at least I hope so – see picture for a view of the site as it stands today), here’s the basics of the new law: adults can possess up to an ounce but can’t sell it or give it away, that driving under the influence of pot is illegal, and that — festivals aside — public use is illegal.
85,000 people are expected to are expected to attend this three day “protestival” on Seattle’s waterfront to continue to push the reform of federal marijuana laws in the US.
