Tipton Police Tip-toe onto Twitter

By on Tuesday, May 28, 2013

This may not be a PR stunt or campaign in the absolute purest sense, but it certainly has stunt-like qualities and since it’s kinda cool so we’ll just file it under ‘off the record’ and crack on.

If you’ve ever wondered where the nearest police officer to you is, should you get in a spot of bother, a new link up with Twitter has the answer. Officers on the beat in Tipton, West Midlands, have been kitted out with a GPS tracker that keeps tabs on their location via Twitter.

The project, which has been dubbed Track-a-Cop, is the first of its kind in the UK.By following the @TiptonGreenNPT handle, or #trackacop hashtag, local residents can keep an eye on where their nearest bobby is patrolling.

Critics may say this is equally as useful to nasty neerdowell types, but the updates only occur every few hours through the feed – so you can’t exactly plan a bank job by it.

Calling this a stunt may sound a little cynical, but considering the need for improvements in visible policing across the UK, especially in light of recent grisly events, this is certainly a positive step.

It also gives us the opportunity to look at his happy chap. Bloody British weather eh?
