Makeovers that give women fake bruises raise awareness of domestic violence

This is a really great stunt from German women’s rights organisation Terre des Femmes, who set up a makeup stand in a busy city centre shopping mall in Berlin and invited passers by to have a free makeover. The unsuspecting women didn’t realise that rather than being made up with flattering foundation, they were being painted with blue-green greasepaint, to leave them with what looked like large ugly bruises.

McCANN Germany, the agency behind the hard-hitting idea, said “we want to impress the outcomes of domestic violence on people and thus raise awareness of the issue.”

Dubbed “The Truth”, this is “the makeup that reveals rather than conceals.” Surprise PR stunts are always great ones to get noticed, and this is a stand out campaign that really pushes its message home.
